Rope Lights are lighting devices that consist of small light bulbs that are linked together and subsequently encased into a jacket made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) in order to create a string of lights. They are primarily used for decoration purposes and are used in both indoor and outdoor environments.
The designs of rope lights consist of three major components namely: wiring, tube and voltage.
Wiring entails the stringing of the bulbs together onto a strand of wire and then encasing them in a clear jacket that is made of Polyvinyl Chloride plastic. The total number of wires used depends on the intended use of the rope light. A simple rope light consists of two wires in which case it can only undertake flashing and dimming functionalities. For advanced functionality such as dimming, chasing and flashing, the rope light ought to have three wires.
The type of outer tube in use also greatly depends on the intended use of the rope light. A wider plastic tube is more durable to external forces of nature but is nonetheless less flexible. They are manly suitable for outdoor uses. A thinner plastic tube on the other hand is more flexible but less robust. They are mainly used for indoor decorative functions.
Rope lights are generally available in three different voltages namely 12V, 24V and 120V, the choice of the most appropriate voltage depending largely on the intended use. In general, the 12V and the 24V are mainly recommended for situations in which batteries are used to power the system which makes them more appropriate for boats, cars and other portable electronic devices. The 120V variant is more suitable for heavy commercial, household and industrial lighting equipment.
There are two main types of bulbs in use. These are the LED (Light Emitting Diode) and the Incandescent light bulbs. LED rope light bulbs are capable of generating different colours by themselves; on the other hand, incandescent rope light bulbs usually consist of coloured filters that are encased around the bulbs. For that reason, LED rope light bulbs are capable of generating more colours than their Incandescent counterparts. LED rope light bulbs consume less power in general as compared to incandescent rope light bulbs. Thats because they generate less heat. LED rope light bulbs are generally more expensive than incandescent rope light bulbs. They are thus suitable for long-term as opposed to one-time use.
Given their very versatile nature and very advanced lighting technology, the rope lights can be used in a variety of environments without compromising on the quality of the light produced. Their environment of use can be placed into two broad categories namely: Indoor and Outdoor categories respectively. Indoor lighting entails the use of rope lights for decorative and practical lighting purposes such as kids rooms, ceilings, living rooms, edges of bars and garages whereas Outdoor lighting entails the use of rope lights for lighting staircases, outdoor patio, deck lighting and artistic displays. Given their durable nature, they are suitable for use in gardens, driveways, pools and sheds. They can also be used for creating designs and messages of different patterns and colours.
